Paper Dreamscapes

Client – Tate Britain
Services – Event design / Workshop facilitation

Workshop design and delivery as part of a Late at Tate Britain event exploring the exhibition Fly In League With The Night by Lynette Yiadom-Boyake.

In this workshop, co-facilitated by writer and artist Jodie Powell, we explored themes of dreams and reality (reflecting those in Yiadom-Boyake’s work) by creating paper dreamscapes — publications shaped by feeling and embellished with creative writings.

Participants used limited materials – black paper, grey paper, tracing paper, scissors and silver pens – to find creative solutions and think imaginatively within contraints. Taking uniform pieces of paper, participants were invited to shape these ‘pages’ instinctively through cutting to produce unique forms.

They used these to make interactive publications held together with book screws. The use of the book screws means the book form is never final or static but can be continually reimagined by unscrewing, reshuffling and putting it all back together.

Participants were also encouraged to add words or illustrations to their publications around the show’s themes. The unique form of the each publication allowed for the participants to write and draw guided by the shapes, giving the opportunity for things to be visible or obscured in amongst the many layers.
